Resources for Developing Match Racing Programs – The Basics of Match Racing
Match Racing is sailboat racing in its purest form. At the pinnacle of the sport is The Americas Cup, where two racing yachts compete head to head. The storied Canada’s Cup Match races have been held on LYRA waters since their inception in 1896, just several years after LYRA began (1884). LYRA has supported Match Racing, in particular for youth sailors, throughout our history, most recently through the Stolze Cup program. In the Great Lakes region, match racers compete for the Richardson Cup, which brings together teams from 6 regional associations, battling for the Richardson Cup Trophy. LYRA is proud to participate in the ongoing development and promotion of Match Racing.
Match Racing Videos – What is Match Racing?
To foster continued growth in this discipline of our sport, LYRA generously sponsored and developed, starting in 2023 with completion in 2024, a Match Racing instruction resource package. We are super proud and excited to share these resources with clubs and athletes looking develop their Match Racing programs and skills. Special thanks for this project to project leads Janet Geisberger and Rachel Harris, and Program Designer Alex Byczko. Thanks also to Ontario Sailing for development and distribution assistance.
