LYRA 2016 – Whitby Yacht Club

The 132nd Lake Yacht Racing Association Annual Regatta was held at the Whitby Yacht Club during the summer of 2016. Regatta Chair Bart Bies and Race Management Chair Leigh Davidson are to be commended on their work. WYC preparations were outstanding. The club members arranged to move their boats to local marinas to accommodate the competitors and everyone had a slip. This of course made the whole experience so comfortable and special. Volunteers ferried guest to and from mass transit locations as well as Farr Island, a floating dock installed for the deep keeled IRC boats. The coordination and dedication of the WYC to the event shined during the 50th anniversary of the clubs founding.
Transporting the boat from SBYC to Cobourg was beautiful spending the last 3 hours with the spinnaker up smoothly sailing into harbor. The Founders East was another matter with heavy winds on the nose and multiple sail changes. Jody Pepper, owner of Kamikaze, later relayed to me it was like a Chinese Fire Drill on board. Oh it gets better from here. WYC had a pre-race meeting for the Freeman Race with the weather report which forecasted heavy wind and rain squalls to start the race followed by what can only be described as dead calm thereafter. Well, they weren’t wrong. Race Committee set up the start line and just as the first warning sounded it hit. Boat crews had all they could do to control their vessels as visibility soon dropped to 150 yards. Torrential rain and squall lines blew through. Race committee radio communications ceased and the start flags and horns were the only indication that the sequence was continuing and the fleets were off. This was followed by hours of heavy wind and rain. What a ride, all hands on deck just to keep the boat on point and control the inevitable gusts forcing vessels to possible rounding up. As the night wore on the wind did subside. When we rounded the Gibraltar mark at Toronto we enjoyed calm winds and the beauty of the Toronto skyline at night. Of course, the wind soon died off and the skyline was enjoyed all night long as the fleet struggled to find any wisp of breeze for hours to come. The Freeman long took some 24 hours to complete. Course racing enjoyed steady winds for all three days of 10 to 15 knots. Bravo course was eliminated and the Alpha and Charlie courses saw great competition with excellent race management and racing conditions. The J80 one design fleet had 10 boats and also were able to use the WYC crane to have the boats measured and weighed for their future NAs. All three days had sunny and warm weather as well as great accommodations for the participants. The WYC venue provided breakfast, box lunches, evening entertainment and meal variety including Food Truck Friday and Mexican Saturday and Pub Fare for the other nights, which all enjoyed. The Craft beer sponsors were a big hit as well. That said the results of the course racing are as follows:
